We were invited to go to The Junction to watch the live bands. We travelled across the Moor from Tavistock, with Caroline our community youth worker and had a good time going around the one-way system- we even went through some streets twice! Caroline finally found somewhere to eat after a few attempts. We thought it was really busier at The Junction and more young people there than when some of us had visited before. We got there in time to hear the first act perform- It was Izzy, she sang covers and did a good personalised cover of the Florence and the Machine song ‘Dog days are over’. Next on stage was Shannon- she had once auditioned for the X Factor and had a really good voice she sang mostly female vocal covers such as Adele and Ellie Goulding. Layla was nicely ‘stitched up’ by her mates who dragged on stage to sing a Sam Smith song- but she was good considering her nerves! Then it was time for the bands- First were Criminal Jesus- as they were setting up Aiden said- “I reckon this lot will sound like Nirvana’ – Caroline foolishly said “Nah they’ll be like AC/DC” 2 songs into the set they played Smells like Teen Spirit! Aiden was chuffed with his psychic ability – and followed it up with another prediction- “you’ll be driving us home later”. They also did a Smashing Pumpkins song (even though only Caroline had heard of the Smashing Pumpkins) They then did an amazing cover of Paranoid by Black Sabbath, with no vocals. The last band were Telstar who also did a cover of Nirvana – Come as you are. Then we had to leave so didn’t get the hear their full set. Cloe’s favourite on the night was either Izzy or Shannon. Aiden preferred Telstar.
“The centre was brilliant- the gaming station was my favorite bit- I’d like to have that at my centre, it was awesome and the first time I’d seen live music” Aiden
“ It was really nice to meet up with the 9th Hubs guys- we should try and do more stuff like this” Cloe
“We were made to feel welcome by everyone and the young people seemed to really enjoy the gig. There was a lot of talent on the stage- I liked Criminal Jesus- and it’s been a few years since I’ve heard a Smashing Pumpkins track!” Caroline
“I really enjoyed it, the singing was really good- the stage was cool and the choice of music was really good- I would go again if they do another one” Abby from Moretonhampstead.
We all agreed we’d like to go again.
