Devon and Somerset Gliding Club (DSGC) are giving young people of Tiverton & Exmouth the opportunity to take to the skies and experience the magic of gliding and whilst doing so, experience a bird’s eye view of our countryside.

20 young people from Tiverton youth centre and ‘The Hive’ in Exmouth (two youth centres ran by the charitable youth service, DYS Space*) will brave the heights by taking part in a gliding experience to raise funds for sports equipment in their youth centres & also as a reward for all the volunteering they do.

Each youth centre offers young people 11-19 a safe space to grow, connect & inspire one another. Alongside the open access & fun, however, Space also provides targeted support like group or 1-1 work – focused on individual young people’s difficulties; such as mental wellbeing, self-esteem, complex relationships & drug use.

DSGC prompted the offer, as the club is keen to support a local community and young people in particular. The clubs motto is “C’mon, you know you want to!”

The young people will fly in a winch-launched glider with BGA qualified instructors who provide training to help visitors “let slip the surly bonds of earth and dance the skies on laughter-silvered wings”. Aside from gliding, young people will be encouraged to help launch and retrieve the gliders, by getting involved during their visit to the club. Ideally developing their teamwork and communication skills at the same time!

This will all take place on May 28th

Speaking about the upcoming event, Jenny Lindow (youth work manager for Space) said “Some of the young people taking part have never been in a plane before, so we are really excited for this opportunity as well as really nervous! This is going to be a fantastic opportunity for young people attending our centres to develop their confidence & raise funds for their centres. We are really grateful to all the family and friends who are choosing to support and sponsor us & as well to DSGC for such a generous offer.”
