Tiverton Youth Centre’s Young People have helped to organise and run our annual Christmas Tea. This has been a tradition for the past two years for the clients of two local organisations, Age UK’s ‘Haven Centre’ and Headway Devon. The young people wanted the event to involve community members to celebrate Christmas with their service and ours, as well as show off their youth centre.
The Young People planned activities for the event during their Monday Senior Sessions with a member of staff taking a lead in the weeks prior to the event. They spent their evenings creating various christmas decorations including a giant snow scene for the stage, making table decorations, planning the quiz and writing letters for donations.
The young people volunteered their time on the day across all areas required. They arrived straight after school quite excited and nervous. They took the event very seriously and wanted it to go well so took on different aspects each and ensured they had a briefing and a debrief.
Our Young People welcomed the guests at the door, showing them to their seats before serving a selection of sandwiches, sausage rolls, cakes and biscuits, along with scones, mince pies and teas and coffee. They also ran a Bingo competition, Christmas Quiz and Christmas raffle. The prizes for the raffle and were donated by local shops in Tiverton and the prizes for Bingo and the Quiz were donated by the Haven Centre.
Alongside this all the Young People sat and chatted with the guests, making them feel welcome and able to enjoy the occasion.
Everyone involved was delighted at the success of the event and it was a great way to share positive experiences across differing local community services, spreading some festive cheer at the same time. The Young People themselves gained confidence, team skills and organisational skills enabling them to feel Connected and Engaged, two of space*’s major Outcomes.
